You Died With Christ
Every true Christian knows that Christ died for him or her. Relatively few, however, know another truth that is equally powerful. We died with Him! Co-crucified on the very cross upon which He bled and died!
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. (Romans 6:6-7)
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 NKJV)
I can not tell you how God accomplished this amazing feat, but I can tell you why. The good news is that one does not need to understand how something was done to experience the benefits it provides. I don’t understand the technology that allows me to push a few buttons and talk to someone on the other side of the world as though he was next door, but my cell phone still works anyhow!
Let’s use a couple of analogies to explain. If you have a serious problem with weeds on your lawn, how would you deal with it? You could simply mow the lawn and the weeds would disappear from view for a few days, but they are sure to reappear with a vengeance. A better and more permanent solution would be to go after their source, that which gives them power, and destroy their roots. Destroy the roots and you solve your weed problem.
If you use a computer, one of your concerns is to protect your computer from viruses and spyware. Once your computer is infected, however, you have a problem on your hand. At that point, a new screen saver is not what you need. The viruses are located on your hard drive. If you ever hope to overcome the problems they are causing you, someone who understands computers has to go after the source–the infected hard drive.
On Calvary, God did not just mow the lawn. And He did not just give us a new screen saver. He did far more. He went after the very source of sin in us, that which enslaved us to sin, that which caused sin to have dominion–He went after the old man, the sin-nature we inherited from Adam, and put it to death. God broke the power of sin for us and freed us to walk in righteousness and true holiness.
Child of God, this is huge! Your sin-nature has been crucified and rendered inoperative. In fact, to be more accurate, it has been put to death, removed altogether out of your spirit, and replaced with Christ Himself. “If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.”
Is this how you see yourself now? Let this truth dominate your thinking. Meditate on it always. Confess it boldly. It will shatter sin’s dominion over you and usher you into a God-glorifying, Christ-exalting life.
