Love and Generosity
Did you know more is said about giving in the New Testament than about prayer, faith, and hell combined? God spends a huge amount of time teaching us to be generous givers. He does this, not to raise cash, but to raise children.
You see, our Father is love and He lives to give. There is nothing He would rather do than share who He is and what He has with anyone who is willing to receive it. And because He is incredibly happy and fulfilled, He wants each of His children to be like Him. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Now, one of the reasons God can be so generous is because He is so rich. “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.” (Psalms 24:1 NKJV) When you have as much as He has, you can afford to give as much as He gives. I am so glad our Father is not only rich in love, He is rich in resources because we are the beneficiaries of His love. He lavishes His great wealth upon His children. “No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
But the Father’s love and generosity is even more evident by His willingness to give Jesus to us. When He gave Jesus to us, He was not giving out of abundance. He was giving out of scarcity. Out of need. His only Son. What love! What sacrifice!
He calls us to a live a similar life, one of love and generosity.
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.'”(Matthew 10:7-8 NKJV)
“Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise… But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. (Luke 6:30-36).
Giving generously, with no strings attached, not to get, but to bless–that is how we express ourselves as the sons of God. That is how we demonstrate that we are the Father’s children, a chip off the old block, partaking of His divine nature.
Child of God, you have the grace to live this way. You are “God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works He has ordained for you to walk in.” So start acknowledging who you are, the Father’s child, what you have, the Father’s nature, and what you can do, love like Him. Then begin depending on His Spirit to manifest His generous, loving nature through you. You are your Father’s child!
