Will God Ever Be Angry With Us Again?
God will never be angry with His children again. Never! “That is not true.” “Yes, it is.” “No, it isn’t.” “Yes, it is.” “Prove it!” “Ok, I will.”
Do you believe that God will ever again destroy the earth by a flood? I’m sure, if you are a Bible-believing Christian, you will answer with a definite no! And what is the basis of your confidence? The Word of God, Isaiah 54:9-10, to be exact. Let’s see what’s there.
“For this is like the waters of Noah to Me; For as I have sworn That the waters of Noah would no longer cover the earth, So have I sworn That I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” Says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” (Isaiah 54:9, 10 NKJV)
There you have it, as clear as day; God said He will never be angry with His covenant children again! And just in case anyone would doubt He means exactly what He says, God decided to swear in the same way He did when He promised never again to destroy the earth with a flood. Since what He said about the flood is absolutely true, then to be consistent, we have to be just as certain that He will not be angry with us, no matter how much we deserve such anger. Any other position would render God’s Word on anything suspect and our response to His Word questionable.
Now, of course, we know God is a Holy God and He hates sin with a vengeance. So how can He make such an “outlandish” promise? The key is found in Isaiah 53:1-5. God loved us and provided a substitute for us, His own beloved Son. Jesus suffered in our place. His precious Son loved us enough to be our substitute and absorb the righteous indignation we deserved because of the broken Law. Jesus loved us enough to die for us, while we were yet sinners.
Jesus, having died for us, God will not permit Himself to be angry with us any more. You see, God loves us too much and values the blood of His Son too highly to dishonor Jesus by being angry with the very ones for whom He died and shed His blood! In essence, what God is saying to us in Is. 54 is, “For My Son’s sake, I swear, I will never be angry with you again. I will never dishonor the price He paid for you by being angry with you. Never! ”
So, the next time the devil wants to keep you from turning to God for help, or from fellowshipping with your Father, by telling you God is angry with you, calmly expose his lie. Don’t panic. Just tell him that God has said to you that His kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall His covenant of peace ever be removed from you, because He is “the Lord, who has mercy on you.”
Child of God, don’t resist this marvelous testament of redemption. Embrace this wonderful reality. Enjoy this amazing truth. Because Jesus shed His blood for you, God will never be angry with you again! And even when He has to correct your behavior or attitude, and He sometimes has to, it will always be because He loves you, but never because He is angry. Never!
