Don’t Bargain With God
Do you sometimes find yourself trying to bargain with God to get answers to your prayers? Or, perhaps, trying to find enough good in you to convince yourself God will bless you in spite of your shortcomings? I have. And even now, I find myself from time to time going down this fleshly and unproductive path. Fleshly, because it’s the result of taking my eyes off the Cross in order to find an answer in myself. Unproductive, because it does not work!
Here is the truth. God always wants to hear your prayers. He is actually pleading with you to come to Him with your needs and ask Him for help. Nothing brings Him more joy than answering your prayers. The following verses prove it.
“Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” Hebrews 4:14-16 MSG
““Here’s what I’m saying: Ask and you’ll get; Seek and you’ll find; Knock and the door will open. “Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?”” Luke 11:9-13 MSG
“But what if I don’t qualify? What if I have not been fully obedient? Will God still hear my prayers and bless me?” you ask. Most certainly, because if you are in Christ, He already has!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” Ephesians 1:3 NKJV
“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” II Corinthians 1:20 NKJV
Are you saying, Bishop, my sins and failures do not disqualify my prayers from being answered? Exactly! They would have, for sure, except for one thing–Jesus has made you righteous!
“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”” I Corinthians 1:30-31 NKJV
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” II Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
There is only one person who has ever qualified to have his prayers answered, and He was Jesus. Everybody else gets to come in His name and receive grace and mercy from God through Him.
“Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right.” Romans 5:18-19 MSG
Child of God, as the song says, “I need no other argument, I need no other plea. It is enough that Jesus died. And that He died for me.” The only argument God wants to hear from you, the only one you need, is simply this: Jesus died for you. Stand your ground here. This is victory ground!
